Every review of the Meta Ray-Ban Display reached the same verdict: beautiful hardware, genuinely novel input, no apps, wait for version two.

That verdict was correct for about seven months. In May 2026 Meta opened the in-lens display to third-party developers, and the single loudest criticism of the product quietly stopped being true.

So this is the consolidated review — what it is, what it costs out the door, what it actually does in a life rather than a demo, what people returned it for, and whether it's worth $799 now that the platform argument has changed.

THE VERDICT, UP FRONT

What it is: a camera-and-audio wearable with a small private screen in the right lens, plus a wristband that reads the electrical signals in your forearm. It is not AR. Nothing floats in the room.

Real cost: $799 including the wristband. Closer to $1,050–$1,300 with prescription lenses. US only, in-store demo mandatory, and international rollout is paused.

The best thing about it: the wristband. Not the screen.

The worst thing: one eye, six hours, 69 grams.

Buy it if you need live captions, you speak on stage, or you build interfaces for a living. Otherwise buy the $379 Gen 2 and keep the $420.

What It Actually Is

Get the category right first, because most of the disappointment online comes from people expecting the wrong product.

This is not augmented reality. There is no spatial mapping, no persistent 3D objects, no floating windows, no six-degrees-of-freedom tracking. It is a glanceable notification surface the size of a playing card held at arm's length, visible to one eye, plus a very good camera and open-ear speakers in a frame that looks almost normal.

It is essentially the same sensor as the far cheaper display-free Ray-Bans, and reviewers consistently found it underwhelming for the money — one measured it topping out at 1440p while rivals shoot 3K60.

What the display does fix is framing. Every previous camera-glasses owner learned their field of view by guesswork. Now there is a live viewfinder, and that alone changes the hit rate on first-person photos more than any sensor upgrade would.

The Wristband Is the Real Product

If you take one thing from this review, take this one. The screen is the headline. The Meta Neural Band is the invention.

It uses surface electromyography — sEMG. Electrodes on the inside of the band read the tiny voltage changes your forearm muscles produce when they fire. It is not reading your mind. It is reading the electrical instruction your brain already sent to your hand, sometimes fractionally before the movement is visible.

It works with your hand in your pocket, at your side, in total darkness. No camera has to see it. Nobody around you has to see it. That is the part that matters — voice is public, touchscreens require reaching for a slab, and camera-tracked hand gestures are both power-hungry and socially absurd.

Reviewers report gesture accuracy near 100% for pinches, with occasional misses on sideways swipes while walking. The failure mode is worth naming: one missed tap on a phone is nothing. Three failed micro-gestures in public makes you look like you're having a conversation with your own wrist.

The complaint that will age worst for Meta: it has an accelerometer, it sits on your wrist all day, and it does not track steps, heart rate or sleep. It's a $799 input device that can't do what a $50 band does. That is a decision, and it's a bad one.

Canada, the UK, France and Italy were slated for early 2026. At CES in January, Meta paused the international rollout entirely, citing demand and inventory, with US waitlists running well into 2026.

Read that how you like — a genuine supply problem, or a product that needs the in-store fitting process too badly to scale quickly. Either way, as of now it remains a US-only device.

What It Genuinely Does Well

The product works when it shows one small piece of information at the exact moment reaching for a phone would be rude, slow or impossible. That's a narrower promise than the marketing, and it's a real one.

THE DETAIL THAT SHOULD INTEREST YOU MOST

The Web Apps starter kit ships on GitHub and is documented as working with Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot.

Which means the distance between "I have an idea for something on my face" and a working prototype is now an afternoon and a URL. No app store, no review queue, no Swift if you do not want it. That is the lowest barrier to entry any head-mounted display has ever had, and it arrived without much noise.

General public publishing is still gated to selected partners, targeted for later in 2026. So you can build it and put it on your own face today. You cannot sell it yet.

The Bigger Picture

The interesting thing about this product is what it refuses to be.

Meta abandoned the idea that useful wearable computing has to start with immersive AR. The model here is much smaller: see what you see, hear what you hear, surface one answer, and take input so subtle nobody notices. The phone stays the brain. The glasses become its eyes, ears and status line.

And the wristband is the genuinely new idea. Voice is public. Touchscreens demand a slab. Camera-tracked gestures are power-hungry and make you look unwell in public. sEMG turns a millimetre of finger movement into a command with your hand in your pocket. If Meta widens that vocabulary without wrecking the error rate, the wrist becomes the mouse of wearable computing — and Meta owns it.

The open question was always control. A closed neural input device wired to one company's assistant is a moat, not an ecosystem. That's what changed in May. Not completely — publishing is still gated, raw sEMG is still private — but enough that outside developers can now find the uses Meta didn't think of. Which is historically how these platforms actually get good.

This is not the arrival of AR glasses. It's the first convincing argument that a small private display, a camera, ambient AI and neural wrist input belong in the same object. For a narrow group that's already worth $799. For everyone else it's a working prototype of an interface you'll probably want two generations from now.
