Krv Nije Voda — Blood Is Not Water

There's a saying in Serbia. Krv nije voda. Blood is not water.

It doesn't translate cleanly. In English, *blood is thicker than water* has been worn smooth into a greeting card. The Serbian is harder than that — not sentimental, not a compliment. A statement of fact about what cannot be diluted.

Your people are not optional. Not a preference, not a lifestyle, not something you swap out when it becomes inconvenient. The line you came from and the line that comes after you is the one structure in a life that isn't up for renegotiation.

Where I'm from, you don't say it warmly. You say it the way you'd state the freezing point of water.

Same week, different kids, different milestones — all landing at once. Nothing that makes the news. The kind of thing that only registers if you're paying attention, and lands like a freight train if you are.

Here's what I'll say, and then I'll stop.

We're building something. Not a metaphor — an actual thing, with actual work in it, and more than one of us carrying it. It's been quiet for a while, because that's how the things that matter get built. You talk about them once they're real.

It's getting real.
