Yoga: The Downshift
The piece of the protocol I always skip is recovery — so I finally added it. Yoga, twice a week, at home, with a yogina from Venezuela. Here's why the least clinical thing I do is pure biohacking.
Lately I've been running hot. Too much load, not enough downshift — the low, constant tension that builds when training is hard, the workload is full, and the nervous system never quite gets told to stand down. So I added a lever: yoga, twice a week.
The teacher
I met a yogina from Venezuela, now living in Medellín — one of those people who make the practice look less like exercise and more like a language they happen to be fluent in. We practice at home: a mat, some floor, an hour. No studio, no incense empire, no Lululemon pilgrimage. Just stretching, breath, and slow, deliberate mobility — the range a barbell quietly takes from you if you only ever load and never lengthen.
Why it's actually a biohack
“Wellness” is a lazy label for this, because the mechanism is pure biohacking. Long holds and slow breathing are a direct line to the vagus nerve — you're manually walking the body out of fight-or-flight and into the parasympathetic state where it actually repairs itself. That's the same lever behind higher heart-rate variability, a lower resting pulse, and calmer cortisol. Measurable, repeatable, and not a wellness fad.
And it doesn't compete with the rest of the stack — peptides, TRT, lifting, whatever else is humming in the background. It's the recovery side of the ledger, the side lifters chronically underweight. I can inject, lift, eat well, and sleep eight hours and still leave gains on the table because I never actively downshift. Yoga is the downshift — the part of the protocol that lets everything else land.
